Torex Gold targets 20,000 t/yr copper output by 2026 to diversify beyond gold

Torex Gold has produced its first copper concentrate at the Media Luna underground mine in Guerrero, Mexico, marking a major step in the company’s shift toward base metals amid the global energy transition. The Media Luna deposit, part of the larger Morelos Complex, contains copper, gold, and silver and is now expected to remain operational until at least 2033, thanks to new processing infrastructure.

The mine's new paste backfill plant, scheduled to launch in Q2 2025, will boost throughput and improve underground efficiency. This will allow daily mining rates to reach 7,500 tonnes by mid-2026, according to CEO Jody Kuzenko.

Copper Output Expected to Reach 20,000 Tonnes Annually

At steady state, Torex Gold projects annual copper output of 20,000 tonnes, helping diversify its revenue beyond gold. This milestone strengthens the company’s role in supporting the clean energy supply chain, where copper is vital for power infrastructure and electric vehicles.

The company’s transition reflects broader industry trends as gold miners pivot to battery and transition metals to align with global decarbonization strategies.
