ArcelorMittal expands Tubarao plant capabilities to boost value-added steel output in South America. The global steel producer approved a massive 4-to-5 billion Brazilian reais ($740–962 million) expansion project in Espírito Santo, Brazil. This strategic capital allocation targets flat steel processing capacity to serve high-value manufacturing sectors. Production will officially commence in the first half of 2030, following a 3.5-year construction phase starting in 2026.


Downstream Steel Processing and Coated Product Strategy

The expansion features a new cold-rolling mill and advanced continuous coating lines. Consequently, the continuous coating line will deliver an annual capacity of 560,000 tonnes. The facility will convert hot-rolled coils from Tubarao into high-grade cold-rolled and coated steel products. These specialized products offer superior corrosion resistance and enhanced surface characteristics for demanding applications. Therefore, ArcelorMittal strengthens its position across the regional automotive, construction, and household appliance supply chains.


Long-Term Market Potential and Global Footprint

This investment reinforces ArcelorMittal Brazil's broader strategy to deepen steel processing capabilities and diversify product lines. Furthermore, low per capita steel consumption in Brazil signals strong domestic growth potential for advanced flat steel. The project builds upon recent acquisitions, including Tuper, Tekno, Silnica, and Perfilor. Meanwhile, ArcelorMittal simultaneously evaluates a second electric arc furnace at its Calvert plant in Alabama, following its successful June 2025 EAF launch.
