BHP Chief Commercial Officer Exits Amid China Iron Ore Negotiations

BHP faces leadership changes as Chief Commercial Officer Rag Udd departs the company. The world’s largest mining company announced that Udd will step down at the end of January. His resignation opens a critical leadership vacancy during intense commercial negotiations with state-backed China Mineral Resources Group (CMRG). CEO Brandon Craig confirmed that Udd will pursue new opportunities outside the mining group.

Navigating Commercial Strains with Chinese Steelmakers

Udd managed global sales and marketing across iron ore, copper, and potash portfolios from Singapore. However, state buyer CMRG continues leveraging China's massive purchasing power to demand better contract terms from global miners. Pressure intensified last year when Chinese steel mills temporarily halted select BHP product purchases before reaching a April settlement. Consequently, choosing Udd’s successor becomes a urgent priority for BHP's leadership team as negotiations grow increasingly complex.

Legacy Across Global Mining Operations

Udd joined BHP as a mining engineer in 1997 and held pivotal global executive roles over nearly three decades. For instance, he led BHP’s Americas division and directed major investments in Chilean copper operations at Escondida and Spence. Additionally, he oversaw the development of Canada's Jansen potash project, scheduled for production in mid-2026. His exit marks the most senior departure since CEO Brandon Craig assumed leadership in July.

ScrapInsight Commentary

The departure of BHP's commercial head during aggressive price pushbacks from China's CMRG underlines growing friction in primary iron ore supply chains. As state-led procurement efforts squeeze raw material margins, global steelmakers will likely accelerate their reliance on domestic ferrous scrap to mitigate import price volatility. This structural tension directly enhances the strategic leverage of scrap recycling networks in major steel-producing hubs.
