India’s largest blast furnace boosts domestic output and supports critical industries
Tata Steel has completed the second phase of expansion at its Kalinganagar plant in Odisha, increasing the facility’s steelmaking capacity from 3 million to 8 million tonnes per year. The company invested approximately $31.5 billion in the upgrade, which includes India’s largest blast furnace with advanced, energy-efficient technologies.
The new blast furnace features four overhead combustion furnaces and two preheating furnaces—the first of their kind in India—designed to optimize fuel consumption and reduce emissions. Additional upgrades include a pelletizing plant, coke plant, and cold rolling mill, reinforcing Tata’s position as a leader in green steel production.
Expansion Aligns with India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat Vision
Tata Steel Kalinganagar, one of the most modern integrated steel plants in India, is central to supporting India's Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, providing high-grade steel for defense, automotive, infrastructure, engineering, oil and gas, renewable energy, and shipbuilding.
For FY2025/26, Tata Steel has earmarked $1.76 billion in capital expenditure across India, the UK, and the Netherlands, and plans to inject $2.5 billion into T Steel Holdings (Singapore) to strengthen European operations and manage debt repayments.
