Circle Green Steel to Cut Emissions in Grundfos’ Supply Chain

Finnish stainless steel producer Outokumpu has signed an agreement with Denmark-based water pump manufacturer Grundfos to supply Circle Green stainless steel—its ultra-low carbon, high-recycled content alloy—across Grundfos' global operations.

Outokumpu states that about 90% of the stainless steel Grundfos uses in 2025 will be Circle Green, which boasts up to 93% lower CO₂ emissions than the global industry average. This milestone reflects the companies' shared commitment to Science-Based Targets and supply chain decarbonization.

The Circle Green product line achieves its low carbon footprint largely due to 90–98% recycled scrap content and energy-efficient production methods.

Driving Sustainability in Critical Infrastructure and Data Centers

Grundfos, whose pumps are used in water utility, commercial building, and data center cooling applications, says this partnership marks its first major initiative in decarbonizing its supply chain.

“We actively seek partners with the same commitment to sustainability,” said Grundfos COO Ulrik Gernow, who noted that using green steel will significantly reduce both Grundfos’ and its customers’ carbon footprints.

Outokumpu’s sales executive Jörg Müller emphasized the vital role of stainless steel in clean energy and water infrastructure, adding that this partnership will support technological progress and climate resiliency.

U.S. Expansion and Strategic Growth

Grundfos, which operates globally, recently announced a multi-million-dollar investment to expand its Brookshire, Texas facility, aimed at meeting surging demand in its largest market—the United States, which now represents 25% of the company’s revenue.

The new plant will focus on products for data centers and sustainable commercial buildings, sectors experiencing rapid growth amid increasing energy efficiency and climate targets.

ScrapInsight Commentary

This deal is a clear signal of the growing demand for high-scrap, low-emission metals in mission-critical applications like water infrastructure and data centers. For the scrap industry, it reinforces the strategic importance of supplying quality stainless feedstock to green steelmakers like Outokumpu, whose low-carbon steel solutions are gaining traction in global decarbonization strategies.
