| Centaurus Glencore Nickel Supply Deal |
Strategic Nickel Offtake Strengthens Jaguar Project Funding
Centaurus Metals has finalized a binding nickel offtake agreement with Glencore for its Jaguar Nickel Sulphide Project in Brazil. This agreement ensures annual supply of 20,000 dry tonnes of high-grade nickel concentrate, equivalent to 6,400 tonnes of nickel. As a result, Centaurus secures about 30% of Jaguar’s projected annual output, supporting funding before the final investment decision (FID). Pricing links directly to London Metal Exchange cash settlement rates with variable payability based on market fluctuations.
Global Processing and Revenue Implications
The nickel concentrate will be shipped to Glencore’s Sudbury smelting operations in Canada starting in 2029 for five years. This deal potentially generates over $450 million in revenue assuming stable nickel prices. Meanwhile, the contract depends on key milestones: Centaurus’ board approval of FID by September 2026, 50% tailings dam completion by December 2027, and first concentrate production by January 2029. Glencore retains the right to terminate the agreement if conditions are unmet.
Industry Significance and Low-Carbon Nickel Focus
Darren Gordon, Centaurus’ managing director, emphasized that partnering with Glencore validates Jaguar’s high-grade nickel quality. Furthermore, the agreement underpins sustainable low-cost, low-carbon nickel production in Brazil. Consequently, it strengthens Centaurus’ commercial strategy while mitigating financing risks. This partnership reflects the growing demand for responsibly sourced nickel in global stainless steel and battery markets.
ScrapInsight Commentary
This offtake deal demonstrates strong investor confidence in high-grade Brazilian nickel and underscores Glencore’s integrated role in global supply chains. Future nickel pricing and Jaguar’s project execution will directly influence market supply dynamics. The agreement also highlights the sector’s shift toward low-carbon, circular economy practices in battery-relevant metals.
