Polish Steel Output Declines in September Amid Quarterly Volatility

Poland reduced steel production by 11.3% year-on-year in September 2025, reaching 524 thousand tons. This decline reflects monthly volatility, as production fell 16.2% from August. Meanwhile, Poland ranks 20th globally in WorldSteel’s latest producer ranking. Key facilities such as Huta Częstochowa resumed operations this year, stabilizing output despite the short-term drop.

Annual Production Growth Driven by Strategic Investments

From January to September, Polish steelmakers produced 5.65 million tons, up 5.2% versus the same period in 2024. The third-quarter output totaled 1.79 million tons, down 11.6% from the previous quarter. Notably, Cognor launched a modern rolling line in Siemianowice Śląskie, representing an investment of PLN 840 million. These projects enhance capacity and efficiency across Poland’s six main steel enterprises.

EU Steel Context Highlights Regional Challenges

Overall, EU steel production fell 4.5% year-on-year in September to 10.1 million tons. January-September EU output dropped 3.7% to 94.6 million tons. Poland’s steel sector shows recovery trends, having reversed declines observed since 2022, when production fell from 8.45 million tons in 2021 to 6.43 million tons in 2023. Continued modernization and plant restarts are pivotal for regional competitiveness.

ScrapInsight Commentary

Polish steel production’s September decline signals short-term market volatility, despite annual growth. Strategic investments like Cognor’s rolling line improve capacity and efficiency. EU-wide production decreases suggest potential pricing pressure, influencing recycling demand and circular economy dynamics.
