Toho Titanium confirms Malawi project’s suitability for high-spec metal production
Toho Titanium Company, a leading Japanese titanium metal producer, has officially validated natural rutile from Sovereign Metals’ Kasiya project in Malawi as suitable for high-specification titanium products, including those used in aerospace and critical industrial applications.
After analyzing rutile samples from the Kasiya rutile/graphite project, Toho concluded the material is of a quality that can be used without any issues. The results confirmed compliance with key standards, including titanium dioxide grade, minimal deleterious elements, low radiation levels, and appropriate particle size distribution and density.
The validation by Toho—an established supplier to aerospace giants Boeing and Airbus—positions Kasiya as a future cornerstone feedstock source for the titanium metals industry. According to Sovereign Metals’ MD and CEO Frank Eager, this outcome confirms Kasiya's rutile as one of the purest and most premium forms of titanium feedstock globally.
Toho Titanium plays a pivotal role in the titanium supply chain, supporting aerospace markets in the US, Europe, and the Indo-Pacific. Its endorsement significantly enhances Kasiya’s strategic value as a globally relevant resource for critical raw material security.
ScrapInsight Editorial Commentary
Toho's stamp of approval adds serious credibility to Kasiya’s strategic potential. With geopolitical instability influencing titanium supply chains, Toho’s validation may accelerate downstream partnerships and off-take agreements. This development could also bring more focus on Africa's untapped value in critical minerals for Western-aligned supply chains.
