Taikonur plant in Turkestan to support uranium operations; completion set for early 2027
Kazatomprom, the world’s largest uranium producer, has finalized a financing agreement with the Development Bank of Kazakhstan to build a sulphuric acid production facility in the Turkestan region. The facility, known as the Taikonur sulphuric acid plant, will support Kazatomprom’s in-situ uranium recovery operations.
The total project cost is estimated at 113 billion tenge ($222.5 million), with the bank providing 85 billion tenge in loan financing, the company announced Tuesday.
Strategic Investment for Vertical Integration
Sulphuric acid is a critical reagent in uranium in-situ leaching, and the new plant will enhance Kazatomprom’s self-sufficiency and supply chain stability. The company aims to secure long-term acid supply as global demand for uranium rises amid renewed interest in nuclear energy.
The Taikonur facility is scheduled to be completed in Q1 2027, aligning with Kazatomprom’s broader strategy to expand domestic infrastructure and support future production growth.
