Giyani Metals produces battery-grade manganese in South Africa, prepares for HPMSM output and Botswana plant ramp-up.
Giyani Metals Corp., a Canadian mining company, has announced the first successful production of battery-grade manganese at its Johannesburg-based demonstration plant in South Africa. This achievement marks a major milestone in its mission to become a key supplier of high-purity manganese for electric vehicle (EV) batteries and energy storage systems (ESS).
The demo plant began production in February 2025 after commissioning in October 2024. It has now produced high-purity manganese oxide (HPMO), the essential precursor to high-purity manganese sulphate monohydrate (HPMSM)—a critical component for next-generation lithium-ion batteries.
Although production was delayed due to water and power constraints in late 2024, the facility is now fully operational and aims to produce its first HPMSM output in Q1 2025.
Botswana Plant to Lead Commercial Expansion
The South African plant plays a key role in derisking and validating Giyani’s process flowsheet ahead of commercial production at the company’s flagship K.Hill Project in Botswana. The upcoming facility is expected to provide battery-grade manganese to automotive OEMs, directly supporting efforts to diversify critical mineral supply chains away from Chinese dominance.
As the demand for sustainable, regionally sourced manganese rises, Giyani is positioning itself as a strategic Western supplier for high-purity materials essential to the green energy transition.
