New initiative aims to align coal mining with global climate standards while supporting national energy transition
Nonprofit research organization Coaltech has announced the development of South Africa’s first sector-wide framework for greenhouse-gas (GHG) emissions management and reporting in the coal mining sector. The project, supported by major domestic coal producers and industry associations, will focus on Scope 1 and 2 emissions, marking a significant step toward climate transparency and responsible environmental stewardship.
Aligning Coal with Climate Commitments
The initiative supports South Africa’s Climate Change Bill, Just Energy Transition Investment Plan, and the country’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). By aligning with international sustainability standards, the framework will help embed credible data practices and emission-reduction strategies across the coal value chain.
Coaltech CEO Avhurengwi Nengovhela emphasized the need for a realistic yet ambitious climate response:
“Coal remains deeply embedded in our economy, our grid and our communities. This initiative is about enabling progress by equipping the industry with credible data, aligned standards and a shared commitment to responsible environmental management while balancing the social and economic needs of the country.”
Industry-Led Climate Action
The framework is driven by Coaltech’s future technologies steering committee (steercom) and is seen as a shift from policy intent to real-world implementation. It aims to document emissions data, highlight emissions-reduction innovations, and uncover further opportunities for improvement.
Steercom chairperson Festus Leteane stated:
“This project represents a real turning point. It shows that the coal industry is not just reacting to climate expectations. It’s helping to shape the future with science, collaboration and a readiness to evolve.”
Backed by South Africa’s Leading Coal Stakeholders
The initiative is supported by a consortium representing a significant share of South Africa’s coal industry—including both producers and consumers. This unified approach signals a collective commitment to advancing innovation, accountability, and sustainability across one of the country’s most critical economic sectors.
