Rio Tinto (ASX: RIO) has unearthed a rare gem—a 158.20-carat yellow diamond—from its Diavik diamond mine in Canada’s Northwest Territories. This find ranks among the largest gem-quality yellow diamonds ever discovered, and is one of only five diamonds exceeding 100 carats recovered at Diavik since it began operations in 2003.
While Diavik is known for producing premium white diamonds, yellow diamonds account for less than 1% of its output. COO Matt Breen hailed the discovery as a “miracle of nature,” highlighting the skill of workers operating in the mine’s extreme sub-Arctic conditions.
Beyond its diamond production, Diavik is a sustainability benchmark in the mining industry. Since 2012, it has operated a hybrid wind-diesel power system that has saved over 118,000 tonnes of CO₂—equivalent to 43.4 million liters of diesel. In 2024, Diavik also completed Canada’s largest solar power plant, aligning with Rio Tinto’s broader net-zero targets by 2050.
Separately, Rio Tinto recently announced it will supply 70% of the iron ore for a new low-emissions ironmaking prototype by Primetals Technologies in Austria, planned for 2027. The partnership supports Rio Tinto’s push toward cleaner industrial solutions.
