Upstream Feedstock Suppliers Prepare to Capture Value in Europe’s Green Steel Transition

European feedstock suppliers anticipate significant revenue growth from the regional green steel transition. Rising carbon costs under the EU ETS will drive this upstream value creation from 2029 onward. Meanwhile, steelmakers are expanding electric arc furnace capacity to meet strict carbon targets. Consequently, low-emission metallics will command growing price premiums across European markets.


Hydrogen-Based Metallics Secure Superior Premium Upside over Gas Alternatives

Hydrogen-based direct reduced iron offers the deepest decarbonization potential for European mills. Therefore, hydrogen-based direct reduced iron captures the largest premium during this green steel transition. Supply constraints and high production standards give hydrogen DRI producers strong pricing power. In contrast, gas-based DRI serves as a temporary transition material with more limited margin growth. As a result, hydrogen-based metallics will capture over fifty Euros per ton in extra value by 2035.


Quality Scrap Remains Strategically Essential Despite Limited Aggregate Upside

Recycled scrap metal provides the fastest pathway toward immediate furnace emission reductions. However, broad scrap markets show lower individual margin upside because of existing competitive trade structures. Nevertheless, expanded EAF capacity will dramatically tighten supply for prime, low-residual scrap grades. Steelmakers must blend clean scrap with virgin DRI to manufacture high-grade flat products. Therefore, high-quality ferrous scrap will maintain exceptional strategic value for European decarbonization.

While hydrogen-based DRI commands the highest financial margin upside, prime scrap remains the irreplaceable foundation for EAF expansion.
