India Rolled Steel Exports Surge 31.4% Year-on-Year in August

India Rolled Steel Exports

Indian steelmakers expanded their overseas shipments significantly in August despite seasonal domestic headwinds. According to BigMint, India rolled steel exports surged by 31.4% year-on-year to 0.7 million tonnes. Meanwhile, finished rolled steel imports increased by 7.9% year-on-year to 0.72 million tonnes. Therefore, the nation maintained its status as a net steel importer during the month.

Seasonal Slowdown and Five-Month Trade Performance

Monsoon weather patterns temporarily reduced domestic steel production and overall operational activity across India. As a result, crude steel output fell by 1.8% month-on-month to 14.1 million tonnes in August. Similarly, finished rolled steel production dropped by 3.9% month-on-month to 13.5 million tonnes. However, domestic steel consumption rose by 3.9% year-on-year, showing resilient underlying economic demand. During the April–August period, India rolled steel exports grew by 34.1% year-on-year to 3 million tonnes.

Post-Monsoon Recovery and Future Capacity Expansion

Indian steel consumption will recover rapidly as construction and engineering projects resume post-monsoon. In addition, key infrastructure initiatives will continue to drive strong domestic demand across major regional markets. Meanwhile, regulatory authorities approved 11.6 million tonnes of new annual steelmaking capacity during the first quarter. These approvals provide environmental clearance and construction permits for major expanding producers. Consequently, domestic supply balances and import volumes will determine future domestic price trends.

ScrapInsight Commentary

India's persistent net-importer status highlights a structural deficit between rapid infrastructure-driven demand growth and domestic finished steel output.

As domestic mills add 11.6 million tonnes of approved capacity, scrap intake and primary iron ore consumption will expand significantly post-monsoon.

ScrapInsight expects regional scrap procurement costs to rise as Indian mills increase furnace utilization rates entering the peak autumn construction season.
