| Vietnam Dak Nong smelter |
Vietnam officially commenced production at its first primary aluminum smelter this July. Located in the Nhan Co Industrial Park, the Dak Nong facility represents a major milestone for the nation's industrial landscape. This project aims to integrate the country's vast bauxite reserves into a complete value chain.
Scaling Capacity and Domestic Integration
The facility currently features a first-phase nameplate capacity of 150,000 tonnes per year. Owners, Tran Hong Quan Metallurgical, plan to increase this to 300,000 tonnes by early 2027. Furthermore, the smelter intends to reach a full capacity of 450,000 tonnes annually by late 2028. As a result, Vietnam will likely reduce its reliance on imported primary aluminum significantly.
Market Implications for Regional Trade
Industry participants now await the facility's first offerings to the spot market. Historically, Vietnam has been a primary alumina exporter, shipping 1.37 million tonnes in 2025. Therefore, the transition toward domestic smelting will likely shift the country's position in the regional aluminum trade. Analysts suggest this move strengthens Vietnam’s industrial autonomy in the Southeast Asian metal market.
ScrapInsight Commentary
Vietnam's entry into primary aluminum smelting signals a strategic pivot toward value-added processing. We expect this to tighten regional alumina supplies while increasing competitive pressure on neighboring primary aluminum producers in the coming years.
