Qarmet Launches Advanced Scrap Processing Facility in Kazakhstan

Qarmet scrap processing facility

New Facility Boosts Scrap Handling Efficiency

Qarmet has launched a modern scrap processing facility near its steel plant, improving daily raw material throughput. The facility handles up to 300 tons per day, processing 15–20 vehicles weighing up to 20 tons each. Automated truck scales and mobile reloaders optimize logistics. As a result, scrap flow to the converter shop is faster and more efficient than previous direct deliveries.

Technology and Equipment Enhance Operations

The facility uses a 1,000-ton hydraulic press to form briquettes, with plans for a second press. All operations are automated, reducing human error and increasing productivity. Meanwhile, the location on the city outskirts, adjacent to the national highway, simplifies transport. Therefore, Qarmet strengthens its internal scrap management while reducing congestion at the main plant entrance.

Strategic Outlook and Future Expansion

Qarmet also invests in a new hot-dip galvanizing and polymer coating complex, scheduled for 2027. Belgian supplier John Cockerill provides equipment for the 84 billion tenge project. The complex will increase annual galvanized steel output to 844,000 tons and polymer-coated products to 254,000 tons. Consequently, the company aims to expand product range and reinforce market competitiveness.

ScrapInsight Commentary

Qarmet’s new facility enhances scrap throughput and internal logistics efficiency, reducing bottlenecks. Strategic investments in galvanizing and coating expand product range and strengthen market position. Scrap recyclers and steel producers should monitor Kazakhstan for emerging processing technologies and supply chain improvements.
