Significant Growth in Long Rolled Steel Imports in Ukraine
Ukraine increased its long rolled steel imports by 47.9% year-on-year to 172,710 tons in the first eight months of 2025. This sharp rise reflects growing demand for angles, shapes, and special profiles, which accounted for 75,470 tons—up 45.2% compared to 2024. Turkey, Poland, and China lead as key suppliers, with Turkey alone providing nearly 60,000 tons. The import surge signals Ukraine’s intensified focus on rebuilding and expanding infrastructure sectors that consume long rolled steel.
Dominant Suppliers and Product Segments Driving Import Growth
Turkey and China dominate Ukraine’s long rolled steel market, supplying 63% and 5.3% of total imports respectively in 2024. Other carbon steel bars and rods (HS code 7214) imports soared 81.6% to 48,430 tons, primarily sourced from Turkey. Additionally, hot-rolled carbon steel bars and rods in coils (HS code 7213) increased by 41.5% to 17,780 tons, mostly imported from China. These product segments represent critical raw materials for Ukraine’s steel-consuming industries such as construction, automotive, and machinery manufacturing.
Rising Import Costs and Monthly Import Volumes
Import expenditures climbed 62% year-on-year to $185 million during January-August 2025, reflecting higher volumes and price pressures. In August alone, imports surged 60.4% year-on-year to 29,640 tons, nearly doubling month-on-month. Notably, twisted carbon steel bars rose 262% year-on-year in August, indicating increased demand for unfinished steel products. These import trends highlight Ukraine’s reliance on global steel markets amid domestic supply challenges and ongoing industrial recovery.
ScrapInsight Commentary
Ukraine’s growing long rolled steel imports underscore the country’s infrastructure rebuilding and industrial recovery post-conflict. Continued reliance on Turkish and Chinese suppliers may affect price volatility and supply chain risks. Meanwhile, rising import costs emphasize the importance of enhancing domestic scrap steel recycling to reduce import dependency and support the circular economy.
