Sishen mine manager Katlego Lebese appointed to lead key industry body

Kumba Iron Ore has been selected to chair and host the Northern Cape Mine Managers’ Association (NCMMA) for the upcoming year, positioning the iron ore major at the forefront of industry collaboration and policy direction in South Africa’s most mineral-rich province.

The chairmanship, which rotates annually among member mines, allows Kumba to lead the association’s initiatives, guide policy-making, and drive collaboration across diverse mining operations in the Northern Cape.

Katlego Lebese to Lead Kumba's Role

Kumba has appointed Sishen Mine Manager Katlego Lebese to represent the company at the helm of the NCMMA. His mandate includes steering dialogue on emerging industry trends, promoting safety and environmental stewardship, and championing operational excellence.

“This role gives us a platform to demonstrate our values and strengthen a culture of innovation, safety, and sustainability in the mining sector,” Lebese said.

Fostering Knowledge Sharing Across Sectors

The NCMMA serves as a professional forum for mine managers across the iron ore, manganese, and diamond sectors. Its goal is to promote best practices, exchange technical expertise, and address region-specific challenges.

Kumba’s leadership in 2025 is expected to emphasize meaningful dialogue, shared learning, and initiatives that bring long-term benefit to the entire mining community in the region.

Kumba operates both the Sishen and Kolomela iron ore mines, major contributors to South Africa’s export economy.
