March steel shipments rise 9.8% from February; up 5.3% year-on-year

U.S. steel mills reported a modest rise in shipments during March 2025, according to monthly data released by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI). The total shipments in March reached 7.725 million net tons, representing a 5.3% increase compared to 7.338 million net tons in March 2024.

On a monthly basis, steel shipments rose by 9.8%, up from 7.036 million net tons in February 2025.

Over the first quarter of 2025, U.S. domestic mills shipped 22.197 million net tons, marking a 1.7% year-on-year gain compared to 21.820 million net tons shipped between January and March 2024.

A closer look at product categories shows mixed performance. Corrosion-resistant sheet shipments dropped 2% compared to Q1 2024, while hot rolled sheet and strip shipments saw a 7% decline. On the other hand, cold rolled sheet and strip shipments edged up 1% year-on-year, reflecting modest demand resilience in that segment.

Steel shipment volumes are a key indicator of downstream demand in industries such as construction, automotive, and manufacturing. The positive year-to-date trend may signal stabilizing consumption despite broader concerns about market volatility and slowing industrial activity.
