Tata Steel Receives Certification for Innovative Fire-Resistant Structural Steel

Tata Steel has successfully commercialized E350 hot-rolled fire-resistant structural steel for prefabricated construction. The Bureau of Indian Standards certified the alloy under national standard IS 15103. This breakthrough material offers superior thermal protection during catastrophic high-temperature building fires. As a result, engineers can design safer hollow structural tubes and sections. Meanwhile, the development strengthens India's infrastructure capabilities across urban developments.

Micro-Alloying Breakthroughs Ensure Thermal Stability

The specialized fire-resistant structural steel maintains two-thirds of its yield strength at 600 °C. Furthermore, the material preserves structural stability under extreme heat for three consecutive hours. Metallurgists achieved these properties through optimized micro-alloying and microstructure engineering. Consequently, building developers reduce the need for heavy external fireproofing coatings. Therefore, construction teams achieve both cost savings and improved building safety.

Financial Growth Accelerates Steelmaking Expansion

Tata Steel continues expanding its production capacity toward 51.5 million tonnes by 2031. In contrast to last year, net revenue rose 14.3 percent to 6.35 billion dollars. Additionally, net profit surged 11.6 percent to reach 242.3 million dollars. Higher profits allow the steelmaker to invest heavily in advanced fire-resistant structural steel production. Ultimately, global demand for high-value structural steel products will support future revenue growth.

ScrapInsight Commentary

Tata Steel’s certification of fire-resistant structural steel highlights a broader shift toward high-value, specialized alloy production in emerging markets. This technology boosts demand for targeted micro-alloying elements like vanadium and niobium while raising performance expectations for structural steel scrap feedstocks. As prefabrication adoption accelerates, mills producing high-grade structural alloys will gain significant market share in green building infrastructure.
