| India Scrap Metal Recycling |
The new India recycling strategy outlines an ambitious expansion of national scrap processing. According to government estimates, annual scrap processing will reach 123 million tonnes by 2047. Consequently, recycled raw materials will supply 21 percent of India's projected steel production. This policy strengthens domestic raw material security while accelerating industrial decarbonization goals.
Domestic Scrap Collection to Replace Foreign Import Reliance
India plans to raise domestic scrap collection by 111 million tonnes. Meanwhile, foreign scrap imports will rise marginally to just 12 million tonnes. To achieve this, the government is introducing Extended Producer Responsibility for vehicle recycling. Therefore, shipbreaking and automotive dismantling operations will transition into formal recycling ecosystems.
Mega Production Capacity Requires Unprecedented Scrap Supply
India aims to expand total steel production capacity to 600 million tonnes. As a result, domestic iron ore demand will surge to 772 million tonnes. Furthermore, per capita steel consumption will rise to 302 kilograms by 2047. Steelmakers must adopt advanced recycling technologies to satisfy these aggressive capacity goals efficiently.
ScrapInsight Commentary
The India recycling strategy fundamentally restructures global scrap metal supply chains by prioritizing domestic collection over imported scrap reliance. Furthermore, extended producer responsibility guidelines will accelerate the formalization of South Asia's dismantling industry, creating major scrap processing hub opportunities. Global scrap exporters must prepare for tighter quality standards as Indian mills demand higher-grade processed feeds.
