HJ Hansen Drives Danish Ferrous Scrap Exports to Record Weekly Volumes

Danish recycler HJ Hansen set a historical milestone for Danish ferrous scrap exports last week. The Odense-headquartered firm exported 60,000 metric tons of scrap metal across multiple maritime routes. The shipment included two major bulk vessels carrying 13,000 tons and 29,400 tons respectively. In addition, four smaller coaster vessels transported remaining metal volumes to regional processing hubs. These vessels sailed directly to key buyers in Turkey, Morocco, Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands.

Strategic Aalborg Port Expansion Unlocks Deep-Water Shipping Logistics

Relocating operations to East Port in Aalborg enabled HJ Hansen to accommodate significantly larger cargo vessels. The recycler officially moved to its newly developed berth at the beginning of 2026. As a result, higher loading capacities directly strengthen Danish ferrous scrap exports to international steelmakers. Commercial Director Rasmus Skou Oldenborg highlighted the strategic value of this infrastructure investment. Consequently, expanded port facilities allow the company to offer superior logistical solutions to trade partners.

Strong European and Mediterranean Demand Propels Scrap Flow

European recycling hubs continue expanding bulk shipping networks to satisfy growing global mill demand. Deep-water port access provides a critical competitive advantage in high-volume scrap logistics. Meanwhile, Mediterranean steelmakers in Turkey and Morocco actively absorb North European recycled iron and steel. Efficient port loading operations reduce vessel turnaround times and lower per-ton shipping costs. Therefore, strategic port infrastructure will remain the primary growth driver for Danish ferrous scrap exports.

ScrapInsight Commentary

HJ Hansen’s record 60,000-ton export week demonstrates the decisive role of port infrastructure in modern scrap trade logistics. Deep-water capacity in Aalborg positions Scandinavian recyclers to efficiently supply major Turkish and North African EAF steel producers. As global decarbonization drives demand for high-grade ferrous scrap, port-adjacent processing hubs will dominate international trade flows.
