Digital Transformation Accelerates Iron Ore Processing Efficiency
Mining giant Vale and technology group ABB established a strategic agreement to scale digital technologies across Brazil. The partnership targets the deployment of artificial intelligence, advanced automation, and integrated IT solutions across processing facilities. This initiative expands upon digital trials completed at the Conceição II plant in Minas Gerais. That facility operates with an annual processing capacity of 11.2 million tonnes of iron ore. The pilot project automated over 7,000 sensors and integrated advanced data analytics to continuously optimize over 400 operational variables.
Advanced Process Control Yields Significant Yield Gains
The integration of artificial intelligence generated immediate operational improvements across processing circuits. Plant productivity increased by 25 percent following full digital technology implementation. Production of premium-grade direct reduction iron ore expanded by 40 percent. Concurrently, iron losses within tailings dams dropped by 26 percent. Automated systems also minimized manual worker intervention in high-risk processing zones. Building on these technology investments, Vale reported total second-quarter 2026 iron ore output of 84.3 million tonnes, representing a 0.8 percent year-on-year increase.
