Australia’s critical minerals sector achieves a significant milestone as Iluka Resources secures long-term rare earth supply agreement with VHM. This 18-year contract ensures a steady flow of rare earth concentrate from VHM’s Goschen project in Victoria. Consequently, Iluka strengthens the feedstock pipeline for its Eneabba rare earths refinery. This strategic move directly bolsters Australia's capacity to produce high-value critical minerals for global markets.
Securing Feedstock for the Eneabba Refinery
The agreement involves the supply of 146,000 tonnes of concentrate, containing 86,000 tonnes of rare earth oxides (REOs). Iluka intends to process this material at its Eneabba facility, which is currently over 50% complete. Furthermore, the refinery expects to reach the commissioning stage by mid-2027. By integrating external feedstocks, Iluka mitigates supply chain risks and maximizes the facility’s operational efficiency.
Strategic Investment and Future Growth
Beyond the supply contract, Iluka provides VHM with a A$40 million secured convertible note to support the Goschen project's development. Moreover, Iluka gains a right of first refusal on additional materials from VHM’s Cannie and Nowie projects. Therefore, this partnership creates a robust supply network that extends well into the next two decades. As a result, Iluka solidifies its leadership position in the emerging Australian rare earths industry.
ScrapInsight Commentary
This 18-year offtake agreement reflects a strategic shift toward vertical integration in the Australian critical minerals sector, effectively de-risking the supply chain for Iluka’s Eneabba refinery. By securing long-term feedstock and providing project financing, Iluka is not only insulating itself from market volatility but also setting a precedent for mid-stream processing independence. We expect this model of financing junior miners in exchange for long-term supply security to become the benchmark for western rare earth projects amidst ongoing global supply chain diversification.
