Rio Tinto has officially commissioned its $1.5 billion AP60 smelter expansion at Complexe Arvida in Quebec. This project represents a major advancement in the deployment of low-carbon aluminum smelting technology. By the end of 2026, all 96 new pots will reach full operational capacity, adding approximately 160,000 metric tons of primary aluminum annually. This development effectively offsets production losses from the closure of older Arvida potrooms. Furthermore, it achieves a 50 percent reduction compared to the adjacent legacy smelter. In addition to lower emissions, the technology will reduce fine particulate matter by up to 90 percent.
